Brandeis University Press. Very Good. 6 x 1 x 8.75 inches. Hardcover. 2008. 204 pages.
Many arts organizations today find themselves in f inancial difficulties because of economic constraints inherent in the industry. While other companies can improve productivity thr ough the use of new technologies or better systems, these approac hes are not available in the arts. Hamlet requires the same numbe r of performers today as it did in Shakespeare's time. The New Yo rk Philharmonic requires the same number of musicians now as it d id when Tchaikovsky conducted it over one hundred years ago. Cost s go up, but the size of theaters and the price resistance of pat rons limit what can be earned from ticket sales. Therefore, the p erforming arts industry faces a severe gap between earnings and e xpenses. Typical approaches to closing the gap?raising ticket pri ces or cutting artistic or marketing expenses?don't work. What, t hen, does it take to create and maintain a healthy arts organizat ion? Michael M. Kaiser has revived four major arts organizations: the Kansas City Ballet, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, and London's Royal Opera House. In The A rt of the Turnaround he shares with readers his ten basic rules f or bringing financially distressed arts organizations back to lif e and keeping them strong. These rules cover the requirements for successful leadership, the pitfalls of cost cutting, the necessi ty of extending the programming calendar, the centrality of effec tive marketing and fund raising, and the importance of focusing o n the present with a positive public message. In chapters organiz ed chronologically, Kaiser brings his ten rules vividly to life i n discussions of the four arts organizations he is credited with saving. The book concludes with a chapter on his experiences at t he John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, an arts organi zation that needed an artistic turnaround when he became the pres ident in 2001 and that today exemplifies in practice many of the ten rules he discusses throughout his book. Editorial Reviews R eview [An] extraordinary book that serves as both cautionary tale and practical primer in crisis response. . . . Whether you are s erving in an entry level or executive leadership position, from c rew chief to executive director, there is much to be learned from in Michael Kaiser's The Art of the Turnaround.-- Theatre Design & Technology Kaiser presents a ten-step . . . program to save or revive struggling arts organizations. The author's program is . . . practical, and he follows it with a series of case studies in which he works his magic over and over again. . . . He offers . . . interesting anecdotes, and the portrayal of the logistics of traveling shows deserves particular mention.-- Choice This book is a valuable management resource; arts administrators could do w orse than emulate Kaiser's work ethic, boldness of vision and abi lity to learn from mistakes. Those interested in keeping America' s arts institutions vital ignore his insights at their peril.-- O pera News To some, there may be a touch of irony: the man who pr esided over some of the Royal Opera House's darkest hours has pro duced a self-help book aimed at pulling failing arts organisation s out of trouble. Michael Kaiser's The Art of the Turnaround offe rs 10 basic rules on how to save failing arts organisations, some of which were learned the hard way in London.-- The Guardian (Lo ndon) Review Michael Kaiser has a unique combination of artistic vision and executive talent that makes him one of the most capab le leaders in the performing arts. This book tells the story of h is impressive leadership. As my brother said in 1960, The New Fro ntier for which I campaign in public life can also be a New Front ier for American art, and he'd be very proud of all that Michael Kaiser has accomplished. (Senator Edward M. Kennedy) There can b e no one who has had the experience--the expertise--of Michael Ka iser in taking world class performing arts companies and reinvent ing them for the 21st century. This is a goldmine. (Harold Prince ) About the Author MICHAEL M. KAISER is President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Dubbed the turnaround ki ng for his work at numerous institutions, Kaiser has earned inter national renown for his expertise in arts management. A Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. State Department, he advises performing a rts organizations around the world, working with arts leaders in Mexico, Pakistan, China, Latin America, and the Arab nations. He has created an online education forum for arts administrators (ww w.artsmanager.org) where professionals and students in the field can share experiences, seek employment, and post opportunities. ., Brandeis University Press, 2008, 3, London: Cassell. "I, James of Jerusale m, brother of the Lord Jesus Christ, heir of the Lord, eldest of the Lord's surviving brethren and the son of Joseph of Nazareth.. .herewith...set down a brief testimony of my brother Jesus Christ 's life and ministry..." A momentous archeological discovery, the greatest of all time - and the immediate effect it has on the va ried group of men and women whose lives are intimately touched an d altered by it - is at the heart of this exciting novel.
In the ruins of the ancient Roman seaport of Ostia Antica, an Itali an archeologist has discovered a first-century papyrus, its faded Aramaic text revealing a new gospel written by James, younger br other of Jesus, the original source of the four gospels of the Ne w Testament. The discovery offers the modern world a new Jesus Ch rist, a real man who lived and walked on earth, fills in the miss ing years of his ministry, contradicts the existing accounts of h is life - and of his supposed death. To the world at large, The Word - if it is genuine - will come as a revelation, a call to re vived faith and hope in an age of doubt and fear. To the syndicat e of international Bible publishers and their theologians, who ha ve guarded the secret since its discovery and gambled their lives and fortunes on its authenticity - The Word is a consuming obses sion as well as a business enterprise of such magnitude that they cannot let it be touched by the slightest tinge of doubt. To St even Randall, the cynical and successful young New York public re lations man who has been hired to introduce the International New Testament to the world, the assignment offers more than an aweso me challenge. Haunted by a broken marriage, a problem daughter, a demanding mistress, he sees in it the promise of a spiritual reg eneration, a last chance to save himself from the pointlessness o f life. But from the moment that Randall decides to investigate the new gospel, he is caught up in a web of intrigue - involving an ex-nun, a homosexual Dutchman, a crippled secretary, a monk on womanless Mt. Athos, a German printer hiding a scandal- that tes ts both his courage and the authenticity of The Word. Rediscoveri ng his faith in his fellow man and his capacity to love, Randall desperately pursues the source of The Word, searching for the tru th at the risk of his newfound relationship with the daughter of the man who discovered the lost gospel, Angela Monti, challenging the austere and enigmatic Reverend Maertin de Vroome, the radica l religious reformer who is fighting The Word and its orthodox sp onsors.
Swiftly, recklessly, Randall eludes the vast intern ational organization known by the code name Resurrection Two, whi ch has been created to exploit the new Bible. Moving from New Yor k and London to Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome - from the Brit ish Museum to a French radiocarbon laboratory, from the Dutch Wes terkerk to a monastery on a Grecian peninsula - Randall continues his pursuit of the shadowy, mysterious figure - convict, madman, genius - who alone knows the truth about The Word. ., Cassell, 1972, 2.5, Lyons Press. A fascinating, exciting, and ultimately, deeply unsettli ng book.-- Booklist n nFrom the Back Cover nThe sideshow to the b rutal Nazi occupation of Kiev is more complex than the npopular v ersion of Soviet myth, but it is still ghastly enough. The whole story is nskillfully recounted by author Andy Dougan. Mr. Dougan' s thoughtful treatment nmakes the episode compelling on its own t erms, whether the athletes were heroes or merely, like millions o f others, people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. n-T he Wall Street Journal (Weekend Edition) n nA fascinating, exciti ng, and ultimately, deeply unsettling book.-Booklist n nWhen Hitl er initiated Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, he caught the Sov iet Union completely by surprise. At breathtaking speed, his armi es swept east, slaughtering the ill-prepared Soviet forces. His g reatest military gains in all of World War II were made in these few short months, and the largest single country that he conquere d was the Ukraine. Ukraine's capital, Kiev, was circled, assaulte d, and overrun. Among the city's defenders who were captured and incarcerated were many of the members of the 1939 Dynamo Kiev foo tball team, arguably the best squad in Europe before the war. Cap tured Kiev was a starving city whose population was deported in v ast numbers as slave labor. However, one man was determined not j ust to save the surviving players of the Dynamo squad, but other athletes as well. He offered them shelter and-most valuable-bread , as workers in his bakery. nInspired by the charismatic goalkeep er Trusevich, the Dynamo squad was re-formed as Start FC, and a s eries of matches were arranged, all of which the team won handsom ely, and to such an extent that they inspired Kievan spirits. The final match, however, against the Luftwaffe, was arranged by the German authorities. A well-fed team from the Fatherland would va nquish the upstart Ukrainians, especially since an S.S. officer w ould referee the game. The match itself was an allegory of resist ance, and its consequences were brutal. n nAndy Dougan has discov ered the truth behind a legendary encounter. In Dynamo he sorts f act from fiction and restores a moment of extraordinary poignancy and complex bravery to the center of World War II. In a sweeping narrative that takes the reader from palaces and battlefields through exile, bitterness, and triumph, Stephen Coote strips away the sentiment that has clouded Charles's merry monarch image revealing him to have been an altogether more brave and dangerous mana gambler, a fixer, a survivor. Depicting the twists and turns of Restoration public life, the horror of the Plague, the tragedy of the Fire of London and the allure of Charles's many mistresses (including the lustful Lady Castlemaine and the gloriously streetwise Nell Gwynn), Royal Survivor profiles an extraordinarily shrewd man who outlasted his enemies to save the monarchy, even as forces were forming that would make England a democracy., St. Martin's Press, 2000, 3, William Collins Sons, London, 1978. Kailash Sankhala successfully managed Sariska, Bharatpur, Banvihar and Ranthambhor Wildlife Sanctuaries and the forest divisions of Rajasthan until 1964, and in 1965 was appointed Director of the Delhi Zoological Park which in 1969 was rated one of the first three zoological parks in the world. For five years Sankhala served as head of the world-famous zoo at Delhi, where his firmly held views on what zoos should be initially aroused anger, and later admiration. He had confrontations too with the Indian tourist establishment, and with the poachers who wished to make quick money out of tiger skins. Then in 1972 he was appointed head of 'Project Tiger', a worldwide attempt to save the Indian tiger from extinction: five years later he gave up his job with the problem solved.
