The Kanun is a set of traditional Albanian laws. The Kanun was primarily oral and only in the 20th century was it published in writing. There is only one Kanun since the ancient times commonly referred to the "Kanun of Leke" from which six later variations eventually evolved, categorized according to the area, the personality and their time of origin: Kanun i vjetër (English: Old Kanun), Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit (English: The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini) The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini was developed by Lekë Dukagjini, who codified the existing customary laws. It has been used mostly in northern and central Albania and surrounding areas formerly in Yugoslavia where this is a large ethnic Albanian population; Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. It was first codified in the 15th century but the use of it has been outspread much earlier in time.

Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit ose Kanuni i Malësisë është përmbledhja e ligjeve, rregullave, zakoneve shqiptare të Shqipërisë së Veriut në një libër, në rrjedhën e disa qindvjeçarëve, para dhe pas jetës së Lekë Dukagjinit. Thelbi i Kanunit të Lekë Dukagjinit janë fjalët e urta të dala nga goja e tij, që u ruajtën (dhe u pasuruan) brez pas brezi për gati gjashtë shekuj. Ata janë përçuar gojarisht nga brezi në brez. Ligjet e "Kanunit" kane shërbyer për më shume se pesë qindvjeçarë si mënyra e themeltë e sjelljes shoqërore dhe vetëqeverisjes për klanet e Shqipërisë së Veriut, edhe atëherë kur rajoni sundohej nga Perandoria Osmane. Rëndësia e Kanunit në historinë e popullit shqiptar mund të mbivlerësohet pak, por rregullat dhe normat e tij vazhdojnë ende të ushtrojnë një ndikim të ndjeshëm ndër shqiptarët që jetojnë në Shqipëri dhe Kosovë, si edhe në vendet tjera në të cilat kanë shtegtuar shqiptarët. Forma e pare e tij e shkruar i referohet Leke Dukagjinit edhe pse ka ekzistuar që më përpara. Libri i Kanunit të Lekë Dukagjinit u mblodh dhe u pajis nga At Shtjefën Gjeçovi gjate viteve 1910-1925.
