It started when a handful of protesters from the nearby Six Nations Reserve walked onto Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia, Ontario, then a residential subdivision under construction, and blocked workers from entering. They said the land was theirs and no one could build there. For whatever reason, the Ontario Provincial Police did very little to defuse the situation and nothing at all to end it; in refusing to do anything about the Native occupation, they, along with the Liberal politicians, completely failed the people of the area. The standoff went on for years. The cops did nothing. The natives continued their occupation. And the problems have not gone away, nor will they.
