When steam locomotion was finally dispensed with by British Rail as 'outmoded and uneconomic', it was left to private groups and individuals to fight to preserve an integral part of our industrial heritage. Such preservation of working steam has proved successful beyond expectation and is due solely to the dedication and professionalism of these bodies. Steam centres, preserved lines and railways draw each year an increasing number of enthusiastic and informed visitors. In the early days of the railway networks each company was privately owned and each set about the task of building locomotives best suited to its needs and budgets. A particular aim of this book has been to present examples of as many different kinds of working locomotives as possible, irrespective of their operating gauge and without too much deference to the exact meaning of the word 'preserved'. Thus we are shown pictures as wide ranging in scope as the Vale of Rheidol Railway, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and the locomotives King Haakon 7, the Flying Scotsman and Greene King. The omission or indeed inclusion of locomotives and lines is therefore not intended to be indicative of their relative importance or popularity! Both authors are railway enthusiasts and freelance photographers and their skill and dedication to their subject is reflected in the quantity and scope of this fine tribute to the remaining steam locomotives in the British mainland. Here are the chieftains who have run the railroads, inclu ding those who set about grabbing power and big salaries for them selves, and others who truly loved the industry. As a journalist and associate editor of Fortune magazine who covered the demise of Penn Central and the creation of Conrail, Rush Loving often ha d a front row seat to the foibles and follies of this group of me n. Included is the story of how the chairman of CSX Corpor ation, who later became George W. Bush's Treasury secretary, was inept as a manager but managed to make millions for himself while his company drifted in chaos. Men such as he were shy of scruple s, yet there were also those who loved trains and railroading, an d who played key roles in reshaping transportation in the northea stern United States. AUSTRALIANA BIOGRAPHYPeter Waite was a South Australian pastoralist, businessman, company director and public benefactor. Waite's philanthropic endeavors provided significant benefit to the University of Adelaide and to local public schools, and generations of students have benefited from his largesse.Peter Waite (1834-1922), pastoralist and benefactor, was born on 9 May 1834 at Pitcairn near Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, son of James Waite, farmer, and his wife Elizabeth, née Stocks. Left fatherless, Waite trained and worked as an ironmonger in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. On 8 June 1859 he arrived in Melbourne in the British Trident and went to his brother James's station, Pandappa, near Terowie, South Australia. In 1862 with (Sir) Thomas Elder Waite bought the adjoining Paratoo run, and he took over Pandappa's lease when his brother died in 1863. On 21 November 1864 Waite married his first cousin Matilda Methuen (d.1922) at Woodville; they had eight children.Drought beset the north in 1864-66 but from 1869 Elder, Waite and N. E. Phillipson accumulated sheep and cattle runs from Beltana to the Queensland border, though after 1880 resumptions caused some loss of profits. In 1883 Waite became chairman of Elder's Wool & Produce Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Elder Smith & Co.; in 1888 they were amalgamated and he became chairman of directors of Elder Smith & Co. Ltd, displaying remarkable ingenuity and initiative. After Elder's death in 1897 his interests and those of Waite and Phillipson were merged in the Beltana Pastoral Co. Ltd; Waite was its managing director, and also of the Mutooroo Pastoral Co. Ltd, in 1898-1911. He had directorships in the Commercial Union Assurance Co. Ltd, the British Broken Hill Co. Ltd, and the S.A. Woollen Co. Ltd. He held Momba station in New South Wales.Waite gave leads to pastoralists with his improvement and management of semi-arid salt bush country. By poisoning vermin, fencing paddocks and providing permanent water he achieved larger sheep numbers; he emphasized breeding, flexible stock movement and the rotation of paddocks. A member of a railway extension committee, in 1874 he had pressed for a northern rail link with Adelaide. He advocated large leases of long tenure and close personal supervision, and he gave useful evidence to the 1897-98 pastoral lands commission. An exacting, energetic employer, Waite lived at Paratoo until he bought Urrbrae, near Adelaide, in 1874. He was a member and vice-president of the Pastoralists' Association of South Australia and West Darling and the Federated Employers' Council of South Australia. In 1875 he was chairman of the Stockbreeders' Association. In the 1870s Waite was a patron of the arts and later became a benefactor to the pastoral and agricultural industry, donating Urrbrae Estate to the University of Adelaide in 1913, subject to life tenancy for himself and his wife; half was to be for agricultural studies and the rest for a park. A further 114-acre (46 ha) site nearby was given to the South Australian government for an agricultural high school. In 1915 Claremont and part of Netherby, also near Urrbrae, were bought and given to the university, followed in 1918 by 5880 shares in Elder Smith & Co. Ltd to enable the land to be used as intended. The total value of his gifts to the university was estimated at £100,000; in 1923 the Waite Agricultural Research Institute was established.56 p. : ill., ports ; 21 cm. Bibliography: p. 56. #250822 First Edition.Waite, Peter, 1834-1922.  |  Agriculturists -- South Australia -- Biography.Waite Agricultural Research Institute Elizabeth's Bookshops have been one of Australia's premier independent book dealers since 1973. Fritz went to Bethlehem in 1860 as chief superintendent of Bethlehem Iron Company, founded to produce rails for Asa Packer's company, and established itself as the nation's premier supplier of rails. A tour de force! --Peter Cooper, editor, Ruby Inside In the pa st year, dozens of Rails books have been rushed to publication. A handful are good. Most regurgitate rudimentary information easil y found on the Web. Only this book provides both the broad and de ep technicalities of Rails. Nascent and expert developers, I reco mmend you follow The Rails Way. --Martin Streicher, chief techno logy officer, McLatchy Interactive; former editor-in-chief of Lin ux Magazine Hal Fulton's The RubyWay has always been by my side as a reference while programming Ruby. Many times I had wished th ere was a book that had the same depth and attention to detail, o nly focused on the Rails framework. That book is now here and has n't left my desk for the past month. --Nate Klaiber, Ruby progra mmer As noted in my contribution to the Afterword: What Is the R ails Way (To You)?, I knew soon after becoming involved with Rail s that I had found something great. Now, with Obie's book, I have been able to step into Ruby on Rails development coming from .NE T and be productive right away. The applications I have created I believe to be a much better quality due to the techniques I lear ned using Obie's knowledge. --Robert Bazinet, InfoQ, .NET an d Ruby community editor, and founding member of the Hartford, CT, Ruby Brigade Extremely well written; it's a resource that every Rails programmer should have. Yes, it's that good. --Reuven Ler ner, Linux Journal columnist About the Author Obie Fernandez ha s been hacking computers since he got his first Commodore VIC-20 in the eighties, and found himself in the right place and time as a programmer on some of the first Java enterprise projects of th e mid-nineties.
