"This illustrated book surveys the wide variety of panoramas created in both the Old and New Worlds, from the medium's invention to the present day. Included among the views of cities are Robert Barker's panorama of Edinburgh, as well as depictions of Paris, Rome, Damascus, and other urban sites. Vistas of the Mississippi and Congo Rivers are also illustrated. Among other themes, the Crucifixion, the history of the nineteenth century, and crucial moments in military campaigns proved especially popular. Bernard Comment explores these subjects as well as theoretical aspects of the panorama's history, suggesting how their makers expanded upon the earlier history of landscape painting. He shows that the relationship between viewer and "reality" underwent a profound mutation as this new medium developed - a process that opened the way for a novel logic according to which the world would be transformed into a spectacle, and images substituted for direct experience."--BOOK JACKET., Harry N. Hardcover. 25,5 x 2,7 x 33,3 cm. Rodale Books. Very Good. 6.75 x 1.75 x 9.5 inches. Hardcover. 2000. 716 pages.
As the editor-in-chief of Prevention Magazine Heal th Books, Bill Gottlieb created the 10-million copy self-care bes tseller, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies, and was the author of the 1.5 million copy alternative health bestseller, New Choices in Natural Healing. Now, Bill has once again created a groundbrea king booka book that can help anyone safely, successfully and nat urally self-treat 160 everyday and serious health conditions: Alt ernative Cures. To write this unique book, Bill interviewed over 300 of America's top natural cliniciansdoctors, herbalists, nutri tionists and more. You'll discover over 1000 of their most effect ive, practical and safest natural remedies for an A-to-Z of healt h problems, from arthritis, back pain and high cholesterol, to re petitive strain injury, weight gain and yeast infections. Plus, e very chapter of Alternative Cures has a guide to the best alterna tive and conventional professional care for the condition it cove rs. And, you'll find essential safety information for every remed y featured in the book. Once you look at it, we think you'll agre e: There's never been a more useful, reader-friendly, get-better book about alternative health and healing than Alternative Cures. Editorial Reviews Review Pick an ailment--any ailm ent--and chances are, Bill Gottlieb can succinctly crystallize th e problem, propose its root cause, and describe a handful of nonm edical remedies for treatment. Creator and supervising editor of the bestselling Doctors Book of Home Remedies, this 25-year veter an of the health field draws from more than 300 alternative care practitioners (including holistic nutritionists, licensed acupunc turists, massage therapists, and the occasional swami) to present a thick textbook worthy of gracing the reference shelf of any fa mily or health provider. Serious physical ailments like asthma, H IV and AIDS, stroke, and cancer receive equal attention with pesk y afflictions like oily hair, acne, nightmares, and wrinkles. Men tal health ailments, such as guilt, anxiety, grief, and shyness, also get their due. Gottlieb's stance is not that individuals sho uld shun their primary care physicians to rely solely on herbs, b etter nutrition, and other alternative paths. Rather, he seeks to educate readers on the biological effects of such practices and tinctures, to share their documented benefits in helpful detail. Each ailment receives a sidebar titled Guide to Professional Care , in which Gottlieb outlines symptoms that warrant immediate medi cal attention. Other sidebars highlight especially helpful treatm ent--from aromatherapy to meditation--for various troubles. Gottl ieb provides an section on alternative healing where he elaborate s on the process, benefits, and safety of each general treatment referred to in the book (from acupuncture to yoga therapy). Compl ete information, an engaging writing style, and visually appealin g graphics make this encyclopedia-style book very easy to digest. --Liane Thomas Review Alternative Cures is a valuable resource of alternative and integrated medicines--a great mixture of thera pies from excellent expert clinicians makes it an essential book for your health library. -Elson M. Although lumped together with Pop artists such as Roy Liechtenstein and Andy Warhol, and often the movement's spokesperson, Indiana and his paintings actually have an uneasy fit in Pop company, mostly because his work isn't grounded in the commodity-oriented (Campbell Soup) realism of most Pop Art. Instead, his work engages with literature and poetry and with the popular rhetoric of the American dream-all permeated by the particularities of his upbringing and life. Ryan's dual accomplishments are in articulating the dynamics of Indiana's art-especially the connections between the artworks and the sources of imagery and themes in his own biography-and in rendering a sophisticated and judicious roundup of the Pop Art movement. Rodale. Very Good. 17.3 x 4.6 x 24.1 centimetres (1. Hardcover. 2000. 716 pages.
FROM OVERWEIGHT CHAPTERFats That Can Help You Lose m Fat supplements? For a person who's trying to lose weight, the idea of taking fat in a pill sounds like a cruel joke. But here's what you may not know: A deficiency of certain types of good fat s, called essential fatty acids (EFA), that your body requires ca n lead you to crave and overeat the bad kinds of fats and put on extra pounds. That's the opinion of Ann Louise Gittleman, a certi fied nutrition specialist in Bozeman, Montana. Fat phobia is the cause of so much overweight in this country, she says. Yes, satur ated fats in animal products and trans-fats in processed foods ar e bad for your health. But not getting enough of the good fats-th e essential fatty acids found in foods like fatty fish, certain o ils, leafy greens, avocados, and nuts and seeds-is also bad for y our health. The different types of EFA, she believes, actually st imulate fat metabolism so that your body burns more fat, trigger the production of hormones that make you feel full, and balance y our body's levels of insulin (the hormone that burns sugars, so y ou don't crave high-calorie sugars and other fattening carbohydra tes. Most Americans are deficient in various essential fatty acid s, such as gamma-linolenic acid, alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), eico sapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahex-aenoic acid (DHA), Gittlem an believes. The best way to make sure that you get enough of all those types of EFA, each of which is crucial in helping you lose weight, is with EFA supplements, Gittleman says. Here's what she recommends:FLAXSEED OIL: Reset Your Thermostat The LNA and other omega-2 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil help reset your body's thermostat to a normal level so you burn excess calories, Gittle man says. They also help normalize insulin metabolism, thus reduc ing sugar cravings. She recommends 1 tablespoon a day with a meal . Flaxseed is a great supplement, Gittleman says, and can be safe ly taken on a regular basis.GLA: Activate Brown Fat GLA helps you lose weight by activating dormant brown fat, the type of fat tha t helps burn excess calories. Brown fat makes it possible to expe nd ingested fat as energy rather than storing it as excess white fat, Gittleman says. Many of my clients who had 10 pounds or more to lose have reported dramatically successful results by taking four to eight 500-milligram capsules of GLA-rich evening primrose oil a day.CLA: Inhibit the Enzyme That Stores Fat The essential fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may help in your weight -loss efforts, says Gittleman. In a scientific study, people who took 3,000 milligrams of CLA daily lost 20 percent of their body fat in 3 months without dieting, she says. The theory is that CLA interferes with the production of lipase, an enzyme that affects the way the body metabolizes fat. She recommends taking 1,000 mi lligrams three times a day before meals. As a bonus, CLA may have breast cancer-fighting properties and general immune-enhancing p roperties, Gittleman adds.FISH OIL: Balance Your Overall Fat Inta ke Although the fatty acids found in fish oil do not directly hel p with weight loss, they are crucial for balancing your overall i ntake of fats and maintaining good health, Gittleman says. She re commends taking 1,000 milligrams of the product SuperMaxEPA two o r three times daily. ., Rodale, 2000, 3<

Der Bildband "Iran -- Land der Rosen und des Schleiers" von Autor Walter M. Weiss und Fotograf Kurt-Michael Westermann ist so ein Gegenstand.
