Sony Music Canada Inc, 1997-11-18. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition cd in original jewel case with inserts; Falling Into You finally established Celine Dion as a superstar in America, so its sequel, Let's Talk About Love, was designed to consolidate her position as a newly minted star. The album was constructed as a blockbuster, featuring Dion's trademark melodramatic ballads, some carefully tailored dance-pop, a bevy of duets with the likes of Barbra Streisand and the Bee Gees, and production and songs from adult contemporary gurus David Foster, Jim Steinman, and Walter Afanasieff. Given that so many talented craftsmen worked on Let's Talk About Love, it makes sense that a number of the cuts succeed according to adult contemporary terms -- they are predictably sweeping showcases for Dion's soaring, technically skilled voice. As usual, the singles (including the Streisand duet "Tell Him" and the Titanic love theme "My Heart Will Go On") shine the most brilliantly, but even the filler is immaculately produced. If the end result doesn't quite gel as an album, that shouldn't be surprising -- this is music by committee, a product that was made to appeal to the widest possible audience. Such a calculated execution guarantees that anyone who liked one of the singles shouldn't be disappointed by Let's Talk About, but it doesn't necessarily mean they'll remember all of the record after it's finished playing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi, Sony Music Canada Inc, 1997-11-18, 3, Legacy, 2002-03-26. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Like politicians, pop superstars staging a comeback need to be on message, devising a story line and sticking to it from conception to completion. Celine Dion's message is a simple one -- one that would be evident to anybody paying the slightest bit of attention. After a ballyhooed semi-retirement following 1999's semi-collection All the Way -- a retirement where she gave birth and tended to her manager/husband's recovery from cancer -- it was time to begin a new chapter in her life, something made explicit in the title of the comeback, A New Day Has Come., Legacy, 2002-03-26, 3, Columbia, 1996-01-01. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG music direct edition; Celine Dion's Falling into You returned the Canadian vocalist to the top of the American charts, and for good reason. Although the album is formulaic, it's a well-executed, stylish, and catchy formula, accentuating her natural vocal charm. Dion shines on ballads like "Because You Love Me" and mock epics like Jim Steinman's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Between those two peaks, she tackles dance-pop and love songs with grace; that effortless elegance saves the mediocre material on the album from being tedious. Though there are a couple of weak tracks, Falling into You is a remarkably well-crafted set of adult contemporary pop and Dion's best album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi, Columbia, 1996-01-01, 3, New York: Eos, 1999. First Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Good. 378 pp; spine creasing, edge wear, some discoloration to front cover; Dennis Danvers has seen tomorrow - and it's ''the Bin'': a vast network of silicon crystals into which twelve billion people have uploaded their personalities to live in crime-free, disease-free and deathless virtual societies, leaving the dangerous and unpredictable Earth to a few stragglers, the creeps and the crazies, the religious fundamentalists and the rebels. Outsiders may visit the Bin for short stretches of time. But once they decide to stay...it's forever. Nemo is an outsider. This is his coming-of-age story. And it begins on the occasion of his twenty-first birthday, when he reluctantly pays a visit to the parents who abandoned their flesh and their son for cyber-utopia. Nemo is a righteously angry young man determined to live, age, and die in a bleak, almost deserted earthly hell rather than sacrifice his body and soul to a technological purgatory. Until Nemo meets the perfect woman - a newly arrived resident of the Bin named Justine - a pop singer and beautiful enigma with an unsettling void in her past. And now Nemo the renegade is questioning everything he has ever fought for or against. But the strange dreams that come to Justine in the dark of the virtual night belong to somebody else - and they're leading two innocent young lovers into a dangerous mire of irreversible choice, and into the intricate machinery of devastation., Eos, 1999, 2.5, Interscope, 2000-10-31. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. 4x5x0. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Nearly ten years after beginning U2 Mach II with their brilliant seventh album Achtung Baby, U2 ease into their third phase with 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind. The title signifies more than it seems, since the group sifts through its past, working with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, all in an effort to construct a classicist U2 album. Thankfully, it's a rock record from a band that absorbed all the elastic experimentation, studio trickery, dance flirtations, and genre bending of Achtung, Zooropa, and Pop -- all they've shed is the irony. U2 choose not to delve as darkly personal as they did on Achtung or Zooropa, yet they also avoid the alienating archness of Pop, returning to the generous spirit that flowed through their best '80s records. On that level, All may be reminiscent of The Joshua Tree, but this is a clever and craftsmanlike record, filled with nifty twists in the arrangements, small sonic details, and colors. U2 take subtle risks, such as their best pure pop song ever with "Wild Honey"; they're so self-confident they effortlessly write their best anthem in years with "Beautiful Day"; they offer the gospel-influenced "Stuck in a Moment," never once lowering it to the shtick it would have been on Rattle and Hum. Like any work from craftsmen, All That You Can't Leave Behind winds up being a work of modest pleasures, where the way the verse eases into the chorus means more than the overall message, and this is truly the first U2 album where that sentiment applies -- but there is genuine pleasure in their craft, for the band and listener alike. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi, Interscope, 2000-10-31, 3, Sony Legacy, 2003-04-15. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; light scuffing to CD. Originally, this album was going to come out mere months after the end of the original American Idol , but it was delayed for a variety of reasons, including Clarkson's taxing schedule and difficulty in cobbling together workable material. Ultimately, the decision to delay the record paid off, because Thankful is a sharp, versatile modern pop record, showcasing her voice, to be sure, but being much better than expectations, much better than the scores of flop diva records that cluttered the pop landscape in late 2002. Why? There are many reasons, but the biggest is that everybody involved managed to make Kelly Clarkson seem young and hip while retaining a strong sense of melodic songcraft. She still can appeal to a wide, mature audience, but no longer does the music sound quite so static. Witness the new mix of "A Moment Like This" -- it's still the same treacly song, but it now breathes; it doesn't sound stiff and reserved, it gives Kelly's voice room to roam. It's a major step forward toward a fresh sound, and Thankful follows through on its promise, delivering dance-pop that's catchy and flirty without being trampy and ballads that are tasteful without being boring. Amazingly, the album has a light, effortless touch, an impressive feat considering that it was certainly as overworked as any of the big, leaden diva discs of 2002. Much credit is due to executive producer Clive Davis, who masterminded the effort, deftly balancing the dance and ballad sides, making it sound easy. But the record simply wouldn't work without Clarkson, who can navigate the shifts in sound with vigor and personality. Although it hardly breaks any new ground, Thankful is much more demanding than an episode of American Idol , since it's all new material covering the spectrum of mainstream pop music. Throughout this record, she makes it seem effortless and charming. She can croon, she can belt out a song, she can be sexy and sassy while still being graceful and as wholesome as the girl next door. After listening to Thankful, it's hard to imagine any of 2003's American Idol contestants -- including the two favorites, loverman Ruben Studdard and clenched, show tune-loving Clay Aiken, since both have taken one sound and driven it into the ground -- being able to produce a record so versatile while sounding like it's all so easy., Sony Legacy, 2003-04-15, 3, Dreamworks Video, 2006-03-01. DVD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition DVD in original case with inserts; A man and his young daughter face almost impossible odds as they struggle to help an injured horse return to the racetrack in this family-friendly drama. Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) is a horse trainer whose career has gone into a bit of a slump, and after years as his own boss, he's signed on to work for Palmer (David Morse), a breeder whose wealth and success has given him a certain degree of arrogance. While Ben has learned to keep his mouth shut around his boss, he forgets himself when one of his favorite horses, Sonador, breaks its leg during an important race. Palmer insists that the horse should be put down on the spot, but Ben doesn't have the heart to kill the animal, especially since his young daughter, Cale (Dakota Fanning), is in the stands watching. Ben and Palmer have harsh words with one another, and Ben is fired, but is allowed to take Sonador with him when he leaves. Ben has a hard time convincing anyone that the injured horse has any potential, especially his father, Pop (Kris Kristofferson), a fellow trainer who rarely sees eye to eye with his son. But Cale loves the horse, and Ben believes that Sonador can make a comeback with the right care, and together with stable men Balon (Luis Guzman) and Manolin (Freddy Rodriguez), he sets out to put the filly on the road to recovery. As its subtitle suggests, Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story was based on the story of Mariah's Storm, a filly who broke a leg during a race in 1993, but a year later came back to win the Arlington Heights Oaks, and in 1995 won the Turfway Breeder's Cup. Mark Deming, Rovi, Dreamworks Video, 2006-03-01, 3, New York: Jove Pubns, 2001. Mass Market Paperback. Good. 430 pp. spine creasing, some lean, edge wear; Just when popular lawyer/sleuth Paul Madriani gets safely settled into his new life in San Diego--conveniently near his lover Susan McKay--trouble erupts. His first case in the breezy border town appears simple enough: find the eight-year-old granddaughter of elderly lottery winner Jonah Hale. Complications arise, however, when the kidnapper is found dead and Jonah is pegged for the murder. As Madriani gets deeper and deeper into the case, more murders pop up. Madriani must now find the true source of these evil occurrences if he is to save his own life, as well as the lives of an innocent older man and his defenseless grandchild., Jove Pubns, 2001, 2.5, Island, 2007-06-19. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. 5x4x0. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Serious country fans know that "Lost Highway" is a Leon Payne-written Hank Williams classic, but even though Bon Jovi's 2007 album shamelessly trades on iconographic country imagery in a bid for a genre-skipping crossover hit, it's designed for those country fans who don't much care about Hank's legend (never mind knowing anything about Leon Payne). Lost Highway has little to do with any country prior to Garth Brooks, a move that makes sense since Garth was the gateway drug to country music for old Bon Jovi fans in the '90s. In that regard, it makes perfect sense for Bon Jovi to refashion themselves as a modern country act, because their heartland anthems are as thoroughly middle American as any country artist, and in 2007 country was at the core of mainstream pop music; in other words, the band's fans already have made the crossover, so they wouldn't see this crossover move as crass, just as catching up. But when it comes right down to it, Bon Jovi's self-styled country album has little to do with contemporary country in 2007, either. Despite duets with LeAnn Rimes and Big & Rich, despite the occasional fiddle or steel guitar, Lost Highway recalls nothing so much as a latter-day Bon Jovi record in how it balances fist-pumping arena anthems with heavy doses of sentiment. Not long after the buried fiddles on "Lost Highway" fade from memory and enough time passes to excuse the bad Toby Keith knockoff "Summertime," it's virtually impossible to distinguish this album anything after 1992's Keep the Faith. Which isn't necessarily bad, mind you -- Bon Jovi has a flair for commercial craft, knowing how to hit the sweet spot between the mundane and melodic, and there are times on Lost Highway where the group does so again. Ironically enough, what hurts is when they really try to fit into the conventions of country -- usually on the rockers, as on the aforementioned "Summertime" and the even-worse Big & Rich duet "We Got It Going On," which manages to cram in every sports-bar cliché into an unpalatable mess, a talent that also emphasizes Jon Bon Jovi's unfortunate tendency to rely on hackneyed imagery -- but when they're just being the smooth, efficient pop crooners they are, Lost Highway is as good as, and no different than, any Bon Jovi album since Keep the Faith. Which may not make it as adventurous as it appears, but it should still be satisfying all the same to those loyal fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi, Island, 2007-06-19, 3, Mercury Records, 1997. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG Direct edition. With No Doubt and Sublime having dominated the pop airwaves in 1996, it wasn't too much of a stretch for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones to hope for similar success, even if their sound was louder and heavier overall -- after all, they had been arguably the best-known ska band in the American underground for some time and had laid much of the groundwork for the style's commercial success. So the Bosstones took their time with Let's Face It, crafting a catchy, solidly written record with accessible mainstream production courtesy of longtime collaborator Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade. The results paid immediate dividends, with "The Impression That I Get" becoming a runaway smash on modern-rock radio and pushing the album into the Top 30 (it eventually went platinum). Some longtime fans complained that the band had toned down their manic metal tendencies too much in their push for mainstream acceptance, but really, Let's Face It simply draws more upon other influences the band had had all along. It's the Bosstones album most inspired by the British Two-Tone movement of the early '80s, when pop melodies and pleas for tolerance and equality were often as important as the grooves -- and that's certainly the case here, as the band turns in probably their most substantive set of lyrics to date. There are a few punky hard rock numbers, too, and even if they don't quite have the hard-partying energy of past efforts in that vein, they are well-constructed songs that keep the album's momentum flowing. Even if the production is a tiny bit slick, and the playing time is rather short (a little over half an hour), it's still difficult to view Let's Face It as anything but a rousing success and easily one of the band's best albums. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi, Mercury Records, 1997, 3, Sony Music Entertainment, 2009-11-23. Audio CD. Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Misérables , and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers who appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late '60s and early '70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi, Sony Music Entertainment, 2009-11-23, 3, New York: Pocket, 2001-10-30. Growing out of the 1971 Yale University Thomas More lectures which Father Dunne delivered in that year, Time and Myth analyzes the man s confrontation with the inevitability of death in the cultural, personal, and religious spheres, viewing each as a particular kind of myth that takes its form from the impact of time upon the myth. With penetrating simplicity the author poses the timeless dilemma of the human condition and seeks to resolve it through stories of adventures, journeys, and voyages inspired by man s encounter with death; stories of childhood, youth, manhood, and age; and, finally, stories of God and of man wrestling with God and the unknown. The result is a fascinating odyssey of the mind in which one travels through the wonderland of other cultures, lives, and religions only to return with new insight to the homeland of one s own. It's the father, not the son, who's the terrorist, and that's the first of many welcome novelties here. Chip Samuels is the most unlikely bomber in the world. A community-college professor with no pronounced radical leanings or history beyond what you'd expect from any member of his generation, he's been beguiled into his new vocation by his old college friend Sukey Kuykendahl, whose fortuitous discovery of a large cache of explosives has persuaded her that somebody ought to use them to make a statement. In a long, comfortably rambling series of reminiscences and commentaries that move from his broken marriage to his sweetheart Anaisa potter turned manufacturer of the famous AnaisWareto his realization that contemporary American culture is based on the creation not of capital but of spectacle, Chip, "the revolutionary who reads directions," makes his passive-aggressive acquiescence in Sukey's plan to disable overscaled beachfront properties in the Cape Cod town of Sesuit seem not only logical but inevitable. As this unlikely half of the Free the Beaches Movement dilates on the aesthetics of unauthorized demolition, and his need to use his attacks to construct a genuinely postmodern narrative, Chip is moving from his self-willed obscurity to a celebrity that will change his life in ways far more uncontrollable than a dozen mere explosions. With unblinking honesty she shares the events of her formative upbringing by a sensitive father and a driven, hardworking mother who was "part magic, part monster." With unreserved pride she reveals the headline-making battles to carve out her own career as a journalist, a controversial consumer reporter, and a BBC anchor -- a calling that took its toll on a troubled marriage and a sensational, highly publicized custody battle. And with biting humor, Anne Robinson explores what brought her to her latest level of infamy: the autocratic style, withering glance, and stinging lash of the lady in black, landing her in the unique position of being both the most popular and unpopular television personality in history. Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Misérables , and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. With unblinking honesty she shares the events of her formative upbringing by a sensitive father and a driven, hardworking mother who was "part magic, part monster."
