He was born in London in 1561 and entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in his 13th year. In 1576, he became a member of Grays Inn, and was called to the Bar in 1582. Two years later he was elected to Parliament as member for Melcombe Regis. On the death of Queen Elizabeth, Bacon succeeded in ingratiating himself with James I and soon obtained a knighthood, a pension, and an annuity. Subsequently he became successively Solicitor-General, Attorney-General, Privy Councillor, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and Lord Chancellor. In 1618 he was created Baron Verulam, and in 1621 Viscount St. Alban. Shortly afterwards, however, he fell from power, being convicted of taking bribes from suitors in the Court of Chancery. Although he admitted his guilt, he claimed that he had never allowed the presents received to influence his judgment. He was sentenced to pay a fine of 40,000, to be imprisoned in the Tower during the Kings pleasure, and to be debarred from holding any future office under the Crown, from sitting in Parliament or from approaching within twelve miles of the Court. Although the greater part of this sentence was soon afterwards revoked, Bacon retired to his estate at Gorhambury in Hertfordshire, where he devoted his remaining years to literature. The text of this edition of Bacons Essays, although the spelling and punctuation have been, where necessary, modernized, follows the text of the first complete edition, which appeared in 1625.
