Cover worn<br>NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Dear Read er, If you have not read anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you read even one more sentence, you should know this : Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted, but their lives, I am sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and mise ry. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one may be the worst of them all. If you have n't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a sign alling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible vil lain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book will probably fill you with despair. I will continue to record these tragic ta les, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yours elf whether you can possibly endure this miserable story. With a ll due respect, Lemony Snicket Editorial Reviews Re view In The Bad Beginning, things, well, begin badly for the thre e Baudelaire orphans. And sadly, events only worsen in The Reptil e Room. In the third in Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Ev ents, there is still no hope on the horizon for these poor childr en. Their adventures are exciting and memorable, but, as the auth or points out, exciting and memorable like being chased by a were wolf through a field of thorny bushes at midnight with nobody aro und to help you. This story begins when the orphans are being e scorted by the well-meaning Mr. Poe to yet another distant relati ve who has agreed to take them in since their parents were killed in a horrible fire. Aunt Josephine, their new guardian, is their second cousin's sister-in-law, and she is afraid of everything. Her house (perched precariously on a cliff above Lake Lachrymose) is freezing because she is afraid of the radiator exploding, she eats cold cucumber soup because she's afraid of the stove, and s he doesn't answer the telephone due to potential electrocution da ngers. Her greatest joy in life is grammar, however, and when it comes to the proper use of the English language, she is fearless. But just when she should be the most fearful--when Count Olaf creeps his way back to find the Baudelaire orphans and steal thei r fortune--she somehow lets her guard down. Once again, it is up to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to get themselves out of danger. Will they succeed? We haven't the stomach to tell you. (Ages 9 to 12) --Karin Snelson From School Library Journal Grade 5-7-This is Book the Third in a series about the wealthy and clever but unfor tunate Baudelaire children who were orphaned in a tragic fire. Pu rsued by the evil Count Olaf, who murdered their parents and thei r last caregiver, 14-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Klaus, and baby Sunny are sent to elderly Aunt Josephine, a strange, fearful wid ow and grammarian. She lives in a house built on precarious stilt s on the side of a hill overlooking Lake Lachrymose, inhabited by killer leeches. Of course, Count Olaf tracks them down and, disg uised as a sailboat captain, fools Aunt Josephine-at least for a while. Olaf is ultimately exposed but not before he pushes Aunt J osephine into the leech-infested waters. So, the Baudelaires must find a new caregiver, who will be revealed to readers in Book th e Fourth. The writing is tongue-in-cheek John Bellairs, E. Nesbit , or Edward Eager with a little Norton Juster thrown in. The styl e is similar to the many books with old houses and rocky shores i n Maine or Great Britain including the Edward Goreyesque illustra tions. Unfortunately, the book misses the mark. The narrator is h umorous but intrusive, explaining words and providing many obviou s clues that surface later. Aunt Josephine's constant correction of vocabulary and grammar, while at first humorous, becomes annoy ing. The book is really not bad; it just tries too hard and there are so many similar books that are much better. Chapter One If you didn't know much abou t the Baudelaire orphans, and you saw them sitting on their suitc ases at Damocles Dock, you might think that they were bound for a n exciting adventure. After all, the three children had just dise mbarked from the Fickle Ferry, which had driven them across Lake Lachrymose to live with their Aunt Josephine, and in most cases s uch a situation would lead to thrillingly good times. But of cou rse you would be dead wrong. For although Violet, Klaus, and Sunn y Baudelaire were about to experience events that would be both e xciting and memorable, they would not be exciting and memorable l ike having your fortune told or going to a rodeo. Their adventure would be exciting and memorable like being chased by a werewolf through a field of thorny bushes at midnight with nobody around t o help you. If you are interested in reading a story filled with thrillingly good times, I am sorry to inform you that you are mos t certainly reading the wrong book, because the Baudelaires exper ience very few good times over the course of their gloomy and mis erable lives. It is a terrible thing, their misfortune, so terrib le that I can scarcely bring myself to write about it. So if you do not want to read a story of tragedy and sadness, this is your very last chance to put this book down, because the misery of the Baudelaire orphans begins in the very next paragraph. Look what I have for you, Mr. Poe said, grinning from ear to ear and holdi ng out a small paper bag. Peppermints! Mr. Poe was a banker who h ad been placed in charge of handling the affairs of the Baudelair e orphans after their parents died. Mr. Poe was kindhearted, but it is not enough in this world to be kindhearted, particularly if you are responsible for keeping children out of danger. Mr. Poe had known the three children since they were born, and could neve r remember that they were allergic to peppermints. Thank you, Mr . Poe, Violet said, and took the paper bag and peered inside. Lik e most fourteen-year-olds, Violet was too well mannered to mentio n that if she ate a peppermint she would break out in hives, a ph rase which here means be covered in red, itchy rashes for a few h ours. Besides, she was too occupied with inventing thoughts to pa y much attention to Mr. Poe. Anyone who knew Violet would know th at when her hair was tied up in a ribbon to keep it out of her ey es, the way it was now, her thoughts were filled with wheels, gea rs, levers, and other necessary things for inventions. At this pa rticular moment she was thinking of how she could improve the eng ine of the Fickle Ferry so it wouldn't belch smoke into the gray sky. That's very kind of you, said Klaus, the middle Baudelaire child, smiling at Mr. Poe and thinking that if he had even one li ck of a peppermint, his tongue would swell up and he would scarce ly be able to speak. Klaus took his glasses off and wished that M r. Poe had bought him a book or a newspaper instead. Klaus was a voracious reader, and when he had learned about his allergy at a birthday party when he was eight, he had immediately read all his parents' books about allergies. Even four years later he could r ecite the chemical formulas that caused his tongue to swell up. Toi! Sunny shrieked. The youngest Baudelaire was only an infant, and like many infants, she spoke mostly in words that were tricky to understand. By Toi! she probably meant I have never eaten a p eppermint because I suspect that I, like my siblings, am allergic to them, but it was hard to tell. She may also have meant I wish I could bite a peppermint, because I like to bite things with my four sharp teeth, but I don't want to risk an allergic reaction. You can eat them on your cab ride to Mrs. Anwhistle's house, Mr . Poe said, coughing into his white handkerchief. Mr. Poe always seemed to have a cold and the Baudelaire orphans were accustomed to receiving information from him between bouts of hacking and wh eezing. She apologizes for not meeting you at the dock, but she s ays she's frightened of it. Why would she be frightened of a doc k? Klaus asked, looking around at the wooden piers and sailboats. She's frightened of anything to do with Lake Lachrymose, Mr. Po e said, but she didn't say why. Perhaps it has to do with her hus band's death. Your Aunt Josephine--she's not really your aunt, of course; she's your second cousin's sister-in-law, but asked that you call her Aunt Josephine--your Aunt Josephine lost her husban d recently, and it may be possible that he drowned or died in a b oat accident. It didn't seem polite to ask how she became a dowag er. Well, let's put you in a taxi. What does that word mean? Vio let asked. Mr. Poe looked at Violet and raised his eyebrows. I'm surprised at you, Violet, he said. A girl of your age should kno w that a taxi is a car which will drive you someplace for a fee. Now, let's gather your luggage and walk to the curb. 'Dowager,' Klaus whispered to Violet, is a fancy word for 'widow.'Thank you, she whispered back, picking up her suitcase in one hand and Sunn y in the other. Mr. Poe was waving his handkerchief in the air to signal a taxi to stop, and in no time at all the cabdriver piled all of the Baudelaire suitcases into the trunk and Mr. Poe piled the Baudelaire children into the back seat. I will say good-bye to you here, Mr. Poe said. The banking day has already begun, an d I'm afraid if I go with you out to Aunt Josephine's I will neve r get anything done. </div ., HarperCollins, 2000, 2.5, NY, Harcourt, Brace & World [1968]. In her eminently browsable exploration of the changing face of English, Susie Dent, Countdown's dictionary expert, takes us on a journey through the most exotic and dynamic areas of the language. The book covers new words from 'sexiles' to 'gangmasters', euphemisms from 'full and frank discussions' to 'downsizing', and world English from 'izzit?' to 'barbecue stoppers'. Chapters also examine the effect of slang, technology, politics, TV, and the media on everyday vocabulary, while others chart the changing face of grammar, punctuation, and pronunciation. Dent also looks at new language emerging from the Internet and chatrooms, as well as in the worlds of food and drink and fashion. A brand-new fresh design brings the language to life on the page, looks very elegant, and makes the book easy to read. Based authoritative information from Oxford's Language Research Programme, the largest such programme in the world, this volume brings completely fresh information to readers.
