1863. DANIEL, George. Love's Last Labour Not Lost. vi, 294, [2] pp. 8vo., 162 x 105 mm, bound in full contemporary green crushed morocco, a.e.g. London: Basil Montagu Pickering, 1863. First Edition. One of 250 copies. A Unique Copy, being from the author's own renowned library, and extra-illustrated by him with fifteen portraits and plates. Daniel was a composer of verses and pieces for the theatre, as well as a ubiquitous member of British literary society and a famous collector of Elizabethan books and theatrical curiosities. Interestingly, Daniel's proclivity for arranging volumes of cuttings is also represented at the British Museum, which holds three volumes of scrap-books accompanied by his manuscript notes. The present volume, comprising 23 miscellaneous memoirs, essays and poems, contains portraits of the author, Charles Lamb, Alexander Pope, Colley Cibber, Thomas Moore, Tom D'Urfay and others. Also included are views of Strawberry Hill, the New and Old Churches and Paddington, Cowper's study and more. Joint rubbed, front cover stained, still a nice copy., 1863, 0<

[175 x 110 x 25 mm]. vi, 294, [2] pp. Bound in contemporary light brown calf, the covers with triple gilt fillet borders, the spine divided into six panels with tooled raised bands, lettered on contrasting leather labels to the second and third, the others with gilt compartments. With marbled endleaves and top edges gilt, the others untrimmed. Housed in a green cloth drop-over box with a red leather label lettered in gilt. (Some wear to the joints). Limited edtion of 250 copies. With the bookplate of Charles Tennant of The Glen. Tennant (1823-1906) was a Scottish businessman, politician and industrialist who was a prominent figure in late Victorian and early Edwardian society. He purchased a large estate in 1852 - 'The Glen', and commissioned Scottish architect David Bryce to build a Scottish Baronial style house there. With a later booklabel of 'John Porter', the great Pickering collector, to the front pastedown and his library label to the rear pastedown.<

His essay on Charles Lamb runs from pages 1-31, followed by an essay on Samuel Johnson, pp. 32-62 (an essay in reply to Macaulay's pievces on Dr. Johnson) followed by a piece on "Old Father Christmas." Presentation copy, inscribed on the flyleaf, "To Mr. and Mrs. Timlins / From Their Friend / The Author / 1863." Daniel also admired dramatists (he owned the four folios of Shaqkespeare, and a notable collection of black-letter ballads.) Tipped in is the publisher's advertisement for THE BEE AND THE WASP.
